T-Mobile has set a new bar for the telecommunications industry by announcing its goal of achieving 100% renewable energy for powering its networks by 2021! In 2017, Green America launched our Hang Up on Fossil Fuels campaign to improve the dismal state of clean energy in the industry because there had been no significant signs of leadership from AT&T and Verizon (the largest players in the field), but we are pleased to announce this important step forward by T-Mobile, which will put pressure on the rest of the industry to follow suit.
As the first major wireless company to commit to 100% clean energy, T-Mobile is striving to power its network and data centers with 100% by wind within just three years. It’s gotten a great start to this commitment by recently signing a contract for its second major wind farm.
We celebrate this promising news from T-Mobile, BUT: there’s still a lack of impactful goals from Verizon and AT&T. The two companies collectively use enough electricity to power 2.6 million homes, but currently use less than 2% renewable energy to power their massive servers. All the fossil fuels they use is equal to nearly 4 million cars on the road each year. With the harsh effects of climate change already being felt by communities worldwide, Green America urges Verizon and AT&T to take action today.
Sign our petition urging AT&T and Verizon to set goals of 100% clean energy by 2025, along with overall carbon emission reduction goals and a timeline to get there. Talking, texting and watching videos on our phones doesn’t need to harm the planet.
Tell AT&T and Verizon that you expect them join T-Mobile and go 100% renewable!
