Big Insurance: Stop Profiting Off Fossil Fuels
Insurance is on the front lines of the climate crisis – yet the largest companies are insuring fossil fuel projects and investing in fossil fuel companies. Our directory can help you find climate smart insurance.
You don’t need to purchase insurance from companies that are supporting fossil fuels. Use our directory to find climate smart insurance providers where you live.
State-By-State Directory
Green America’s Climate Smart Insurance Directory provides alternatives to the mega-insurance companies that are underwriting and investing in fossil fuels.
How It Works
In 2024, Green America pioneered the first Climate Smart Insurance Directory, a unique listing of property insurance companies in every state that do not insure fossil fuel projects and invest minimally in the fossil fuel industry.
Now we have upgraded this directory to be truly comprehensive, using data reported by property insurance companies to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
This directory lists property insurance companies that:
- Offer home insurance, auto insurance, or both home and auto insurance to consumers. Note: Most companies offering home insurance also offer renters insurance.
- Do not insure fossil fuel projects that we know of (this information is not always available).
- Have low to no direct investments in the fossil fuel industry, graded as follows: Grade A (less than $100 million), Grade B ($100 million to $250 million), and Grade C ($250 million to $500 million). No companies with more than $500 million invested in the fossil fuel industry are listed.
- Have no more than 3.5% of the total investment portfolio in fossil fuels.
- Have a claims nonpayment rate of less than 40% as tracked by Weiss Ratings.
- Have a rating of A- or above for financial stability from either AM Best or Demotech. About 40 smaller companies have no financial rating but otherwise qualify for listing. Those are denoted with an asterisk*.

Credits
To create a comprehensive Climate Smart Insurance Directory, Green America obtained 2025 investment data reported by all property insurance companies doing business in the United States to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The NAIC does not endorse any analysis or conclusions based upon use of its data.
Equally important was our work with Urgewald, a nonprofit environmental and human rights organization based in Germany, to analyze this data. Urgewald keeps the Global Coal Exit List, Metallurgical Coal Exit List, and Global Oil and Gas Exit List.
By cross-listing property insurance company investments in stocks and bonds with the thousands of fossil fuel companies they track, Urgewald was able to clearly identify investments in fossil fuels and the percentage of overall portfolios invested.
We then worked with Urgewald’s researcher Clara Freudenberg to vet each company to ensure they serve individual consumers, not commercial or specialty insurance, and they meet our criteria for listing in the directory. A huge thank you to Clara and Urgewald!
