Green America, founded in 1982, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a socially just and environmentally sustainable society by harnessing economic power – the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace. Our key program areas include clean energy/climate action, regenerative agriculture, fair labor, responsible finance, and green living.  We carry out our work in three strategic and overlapping hubs: 1) Consumer & Corporate Engagement Programs, 2) Green Business Network, and 3) Center for Sustainability Solutions.
 

The Development Team focuses on increasing revenues for Green America’s work from individual major donors ($1,000+), foundations, and green business supporters.  Team members include the Director of Development & Organizational Advancement, Major Gifts Officer, Foundations Manager, and Development Manager.  The Executive Co-Directors and President & CEO are extended team members, as they play a key role in fundraising.

 

We seek an experienced development professional to manage and grow Green America’s major gifts program, with a focus on renewing and upgrading current mid-level donors, identifying and qualifying new major gifts prospects, and building and maintaining long-term donor relationships.  The position will be based in Washington, DC at the Green America offices.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILTIES

  1. Manage Portfolio of Current Leaders ($1,000+ annual donors)
  • Manage a portfolio of 100-150 Leaders Circle members, with first year annual goal of $220,000 -250,000
  • Build strong donor relationships, set personalized stewardship plans (mail, visits, engagement in our work, etc.), and solicit for increased/renewed support
  • Coordinate, write, and personalize renewal mailings, reply forms, and proposals
  • Manage segmented mailing lists for in-house mailings to major donors
  • Produce personalized gift acknowledgements for major donors, including greeting cards, photo books, and videos
  • Work with fellow Development and Executive team members to coordinate donor visit and cultivation efforts
  • Track all donor actions in Raiser’s Edge

 

  1. Cultivating New Major Donors
  • Conduct donor research to identify top prospects and to prepare for meetings
  • Plan and execute new cultivation strategies to recognize major gift prospects and build a compelling case for them to deepen their support
  • Conduct and coordinate discovery visits to major donor prospects
  • Set and execute cultivation plans for top prospects

 

  1. Travel & Cultivation
  • Travel 20-30% of the time to meet with and visit donors locally and nationally
  • Coordinate webinars series with various GA teams and maximize it as a donor cultivation tool
  • Lead the coordination of 3-5 in-person events per year (luncheons, small gatherings, film screenings, clothing swaps, happy hours) locally and nationally.
  • Produce quarterly Policy Highlights emails for major donors and foundations
  • Assist in the production of promotional materials for use by the Development Team

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree
  • 3-5 years of experience and demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising
  • Strong background in nonprofit fundraising and desire to grow in this field
  • Exemplary relationship-building, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic understanding of environmental sustainability, social justice, and green economy issues
  • Ability to obtain a deep understanding of Green America’s program areas and communicate this understanding to donors and prospects
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Flexibility and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at the same time
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge or another CRM/donor database
  • Valid driver’s license and ability and willingness to travel
  • Interest in working in a cooperative work environment
  • Ability to implement projects with minimal supervision and work well on a team
  • Ability to work to deadlines and remain focused and calm under deadline pressure
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certification a plus.
