The major areas of social and environmental impact the STM continues to encourage is reduction of food waste by reducing food overproduction, and eliminating single use plastics at events. Whenever possible, excess food is redistributed to shelters and plate waste is composted by the food provider. I try to bring awareness of these issues to my clients and other event stakeholders so that they can see the impact they have on their bottom line.

My company is small and until now have been teaming up with other planners to handle a part of a project. As I have a home office, my utilities are managed by a local utility company who outlines its sustainability goals on its website. Additionally, Washington, DC plans to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2032. Currently my home office subscribes to renewable energy option. STM sources locally to avoid materials traveling long distances. STM maintains a culture to offset emissions like avoiding automobile usage when possible, printing only when necessary, using typeface fonts to use less ink and paper when printing. My home office participated in the Anacostia Watershed audit to reduce storm water runoff by planting trees, shrubs and other landscaping. All appliances are energy star rated and toilets are low flush high-efficiency.
I work from home office, which cuts my carbon footprint buy not having to commute to a separate place to do work. When I travel to client meetings, I try to use car share (car2go) or public transportation. When directing guests to venues, the invitation always included directions via public transportation. For destination events, group shuttles are often contracted to avoid individuals form traveling separately. For air travel, I encourage clients to utilize the carbon offset on the ticket purchase.
