Green America condemns the violent assault on the US Capitol yesterday by rioters. We also condemn the rhetoric of the US President and his enablers in Congress that incited his supporters to engage in an aborted coup.

The assault on Congress, the seat of US democracy, is unprecedented in modern times. But Wednesday’s events have roots in violent white supremacy that has a long history in our nation. The mobs that invaded the US Capitol waving Confederate flags, demonstrate all too clearly the danger of President Trump’s violent and racist assault on democracy in the US. The fact that this mostly white mob was allowed to invade the US Capitol and threaten elected officials and staff for carrying out democracy, while peaceful Black protestors and their allies are regularly assaulted and injured by police for saying that Black Lives Matter, is telling and is a travesty.

First and foremost, President Trump must be held accountable. As the NAACP Legal Defense Fund stated, “The president has consistently escalated his supplications to white supremacist and extremist groups in an effort to avoid the inevitable transition of power resulting from his loss in the 2020 presidential election. Indeed, today’s insurrection at the Capitol is the inevitable culmination of the impunity with which Mr. Trump has violated norms and standards of decent conduct, engaged in ugly, violent and racist rhetoric, and disdained adherence to the rule of law.”

We join with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, allies across the US, and the editorial boards of many newspapers, in calling for Donald Trump’s resignation. If he does not leave office voluntarily, the Vice President, cabinet members, and the US Congress all have a duty to remove him from office, whether through impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment, to protect the American people and our democracy.

We also urge all business leaders in the US to call for Donald Trump’s immediate resignation or removal from the presidency. Business leaders, from small business owners to the heads of the largest corporations in the US, have increasingly raised their voices to call for a peaceful transition of power to the Biden administration, and a recognition of the fact that Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris fairly won the November election.  The National Association of Manufacturers is calling on Vice President Mike Pence to seriously consider working with cabinet members to use the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. Now, more business leaders must call for an immediate end to the Trump presidency.

We also call on all corporations to end their ties to the Proud Boys and other organizations that supported yesterday’s violence. We support Color of Change’s petition urging JP Morgan Chase and Stripe to end their ties to GiveSendGo and end the flow of cash to the Proud Boys.

Green America’s vision -- a world where all people have enough, where all communities are healthy and safe, and where the abundance of the Earth is preserved for all the generations to come – requires a functioning democracy.  Yesterday, we saw democracy under assault, and we all need to take action to preserve it.

Call your Representative now and tell them you want them to  impeach Donald Trump, and then call your Senators and tell them you want them to vote for removal.  You can reach them through the US Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121.
